A Middletown man, 34, is facing serious charges related to child molestation and sexual assault. Steven Sousa has been indicted by the Statewide Grand Jury in Rhode Island on multiple counts.

The charges against Sousa include three counts of first-degree child molestation, two counts of first-degree sexual assault, and three counts of second-degree child molestation. The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office announced these charges.

According to investigators, the alleged crimes took place in Middletown between February 14, 2023, and May 31, 2024. The Middletown Police Department led the investigation that resulted in these charges.

Sousa’s arraignment is set for December 18 in Newport County Superior Court.

The Statewide Grand Jury returned this indictment on December 16 as part of an interim report. It’s important to note that the Attorney General’s Office stresses that an indictment, information, or complaint is just an allegation. The law presumes a defendant is innocent unless proven guilty.
