Three Newport residents will be among the artists featured in new exhibitions opening Sunday, September 15, from 2 to 4 pm at the historic Providence Art Club in Providence.

Watercolorists William Heydt, John K. Grosvenor, and sculptor Jeffrey Fischer will all have works on view. Little Compton painter Johanna McKenzie and Providence artist Wendy Ingram will also have works on view. These exhibitions continue through October 3.

William Heydt first discovered Newport as a student at RISD, where he earned an MFA. In his figurative watercolor paintings, he has documented the residents of the City by the Sea for years, and his images tell the stories of individuals who live in Newport year-round. Heydt’s colorful paintings will be shared alongside sculptures by Jeffrey Fischer.

A self-taught sculptor, Fischer focuses on bird as his chosen subject. Primarily executed in wood with complimentary stone bases, his three-dimensional artworks capture a variety of birds in elegant and semi-abstracted forms. Fischer has previously been the subject of a solo exhibition at Jessica Hagen’s gallery in Newport.

John K. Grosvenor is a lifelong Newport resident and a member of a prolific family of artists who have been based in the city. His late father, Richard Grosvenor, was a longtime art and architecture instructor at St. George’s School. John will be the subject of a mini-solo show in the Club’s Mary Castelnovo Gallery, titled Ocean State of Mind. In the exhibition he will share watercolor landscapes that capture local land and sea with the artist’s signature breezy hand.

Speaking of the shows, Art Club gallery manager Michael Rose says, “It is wonderful to share works by prominent Newport artists in these exhibitions. I hope their neighbors will make the trek to Providence to celebrate this work, and I know that residents in the Creative Capital will enjoy discovering and rediscovering works made by these talented Newport residents.”
