With just a week to go until the Rhode Island State Primary, some Newport voters have already begun voting via mail ballot or early in person.
According to the Rhode Island Turnout Tracker, as of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 369 Newport voters had participated in the 2024 State Primary thus far.
The Board of Elections has received 213 mail ballots from Newport Voters, while 156 have early voted.
Voters in Newport’s Ward 1, 2, and 3 will find on their ballot for the Democratic Primary the choice between incumbent Sheldon Whitehouse & Michael J. Costa for Senator in Congress and on the Republic Primary the choice between Patricia Morgan and Raymond T. McKay for Senator in Congress.
Voters in Newport’s Ward 1 will also find a race for Non-Partisan Council Ward 1 on their Democratic and Republican Primary Ballots. They will choose between Hugo J. DeAscentis, Jr., Ellen M. Pinnock, and Charles F. Pattavina.
According to the Rhode Island Department of State, Newport has 13,714 active-status registered voters. Approximately 45% (6,224) are registered Democrats, 42% are Unaffiliated, and 12% (1,673) are registered Republicans.
Across the state, 13,925 voters have turned out to vote – 7,896 via mail ballots and 6,029 via early voting. That’s approximately a 1.8% statewide voter turnout.
