Newport Hospital receives recognition as the top hospital for rehabilitation in the state of Rhode Island, according to Becker’s Hospital Review.

The recognition is the result of an assessment of more than 1,000 hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked them according to care for patients recovering from conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, and severe burns.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our team and their dedication to quality care in support of these acute patients as they strive to rebuild health and reclaim living. Our Lifespan Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center at Newport Hospital has exceptional patient outcomes and it’s due to the comprehensive team approach supported by physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language therapists, case managers and other support staff who have been passionate and committed to this unique care for decades.,” said Patricia Wolfe, PT, MS, Vice President, Lifespan Rehabilitation Services.

“The goal of inpatient rehabilitation is to help patients regain lost function so they can return to the community and live as independently as possible. This could include regaining skills necessary for completing activities of daily living like bathing and dressing; maximizing muscle control and strength; improving balance, mobility, swallowing, eating, and speaking; optimizing communication skills; and minimizing pain and cognitive deficits. The Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center’s highly qualified and dedicated staff employs an interdisciplinary team approach to care, with the patient at the center of that team.”

“I regularly receive letters and emails from former Vanderbilt patients and their families wanting to express their gratitude for the care they received. Patients arrive here apprehensive about the road to recovery based on their highly acute conditions. The enormity of the situation can be overwhelming for patients and families, and the team at Vanderbilt is unmatched at providing assurance and exceptional care in the most therapeutic and loving environment. I am not surprised that this team has received this recognition, it’s well deserved,” said Crista F. Durand, MBA, FACHE, President, Newport Hospital.
