Rhode Island Seafood Company of Warren has recalled clams harvested Sept. 22 from a shellfish area that was closed at the time because of rainfall, the Rhode Island Department of Health announced.

Heavy rain can trigger closures in clamming areas because stormwater runoff can make shellfish unsafe to eat, according to RIDOH.

All of the clams harvested that day went to Tony’s Seafood in Warren, which is notifying customers and pulling affected product from commerce, according to RIDOH. Some product was shipped to locations in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and those out-of-state contacts are also being notified.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, according to RIDOH.

People who believe they became sick from something they ate can report it to RIDOH’s foodborne illness complaint system at 401-222-2749 or through the department’s online form.
