Sailors and enthusiasts are gearing up for the 97th Around the Island Race, set to take place on Sept. 1, 2024, at the Conanicut Yacht Club in Jamestown, Rhode Island. The iconic event, which marks the end of the summer sailing season, is now open for registration.
The 18-mile race around Jamestown is expected to draw a fleet of 100 boats, showcasing the competitive spirit and camaraderie that has made it a beloved tradition for nearly a century.
The race will commence at 11 a.m., with the first warning at 10:55 a.m. Participants will navigate a scenic course past local landmarks such as Beavertail Lighthouse, Fort Wetherill, Fort Getty, and under the Jamestown and Newport Bridges.
Eligibility for the race is open to monohull and multihull boats with a minimum length overall (LOA) of 22 feet and a maximum LOA of 80 feet. All participating vessels must have a valid, current PHRF-NB certificate listed on the PHRF website with a rating of 280 or lower.
Registration for the event is available online through Yacht Scoring, with an entry fee of $175. Organizers encourage early registration, as a late fee of $35 will be applied after 5 p.m. on Aug. 23.
Following the race, participants and spectators can look forward to the “party of the season” on the CYC lawn. The After Race BBQ and Awards Party promises to be a highlight of the event, with tickets available for purchase starting Aug. 9, 2024, via Yacht Scoring.
“The Around the Island Race is renowned for its competitive spirit and camaraderie,” a press release from organizers states.
The event isn’t just for sailors; spectators are encouraged to come out and watch the fleet of beautiful boats sail by. The race offers numerous vantage points along the Jamestown shoreline for viewers to take in the spectacle.
Adding to the event’s charm is the yearly poster designed by local artist Hillary Dutton. This year, Dutton has depicted the historic Horsehead home, continuing a tradition that began 13 years ago with her first design for the 84th CYC ATI.

Enthusiasts can view all of Dutton’s designs from previous years on the event’s website, offering a visual journey through the race’s recent history.
As the event approaches, organizers are leveraging social media to build excitement. Followers on Facebook and Instagram can expect to see stories behind the boats, profiles of registered participants, and other important announcements.
The Around the Island Race stands as a testament to Jamestown’s rich sailing heritage and continues to attract participants and spectators alike with its blend of competition, scenery, and community spirit.
As the 97th edition approaches, the Conanicut Yacht Club invites sailing enthusiasts to be part of this historic race and enjoy a fantastic day of sailing and festivities. With registration now open, the countdown to one of New England’s most anticipated sailing events of the year has begun.
