Representatives from the Indian Lake Hydrilla Response Coalition have received $5,000 in legislative grants to help combat the invasive species that is spreading in the lake.
A total of seven neighborhoods around the lake that are home to over 700 homes have been working together to form a non-profit organization eligible for federal and state grants. The coalition presented the organization with legislative grants of $2,500 each for a total of $5,000.
Hydrilla was discovered in August 2023, and the neighborhoods around the lake quickly came together to form an organization to deal with the issue.
During the most recent legislative session, Sen. Susan Sosnowski introduced legislation to create a Freshwater Lake Management Program which would create a restricted receipt account for lake and pond management issues related to the control of invasive aquatic plants. Rep. Carol McEntee was one of the main backers of the bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Dan McKee on June 26.
