Newport County YMCA on Saturday morning was forced to close due to an incident involving their steam room.

Several readers alerted What’sUpNewp of a large fire department presence at the facility earlier Saturday morning.

Newport County YMCA provided the following update on Instagram around 10:30 am on Saturday morning;

Today we had an incident involving our steam room in the women’s locker room. Members that were in that area during the incident are all ok. Thank you to all of the emergency responders that came to the YMCA to assist. It was first reported as an explosion at the YMCA, which did not happen. The YMCA did suffer water damage in some areas. Indoor activities at the YMCA will remain closed until further notice. We will issue an update later today, 6/15/24. Thank you.

Just before 3 pm on Saturday, June 15, Newport County YMCA announced that they will reopen on Sunday, June 16.

“The YMCA will reopen on Sunday, 6/16/24 at 7am. The Women’s Locker-room, downstairs bathrooms and the spin room will remain closed. The restoration company will be working in those areas for the next couple of days to assess the water damage. Due to the closing of the women’s locker-room we ask that you use the Universal Locker-room. Both steam rooms will be closed until further notice as we determine the cause of the incident.
