Rhode Island voters have one week to register or update their party affiliation ahead of the September 9 statewide primary, Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore reminded voters Monday.
The deadline to register to vote and the deadline to disaffiliate from a current party are both August 10. Voters who are registered with one party but want to vote in another party’s primary must disaffiliate by that date. Unaffiliated voters who participate in a party primary will automatically remain unaffiliated afterward — no additional steps required.
Both registration and disaffiliation can be completed online at vote.ri.gov or in person at a local board of canvassers office. Drop-off locations will be available on August 10, which is a state holiday.
Mail ballot applications are also available now. The deadline to request a mail ballot for the primary is 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19. Applications are available online at vote.ri.gov or via paper form.
