Newport Police have identified a second suspect in the July 19 double shooting near Park Holm and have obtained an arrest warrant for him, the department announced Wednesday.
Nasydi Brown, 18, was located at the same Chestnut Avenue residence in Newport News, Va., where members of the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Tyquan Johnson, 19, on July 29. Brown was already wanted by the Hampton, Va., Police Department on charges of reckless handling of a firearm resulting in serious injury, abuse or neglect of a child, reckless disregard for life, shooting in a public place causing injury and maliciously shooting at an occupied building.
Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified Brown as the second suspect in the Newport shooting, police said. On Aug. 3, Newport Police obtained a warrant charging him with Felony Assault with a Firearm and Discharging a Firearm in a Compact Area — the same charges Johnson faces.
Johnson waived extradition at a hearing July 30 and will be returned to Rhode Island no later than Aug. 18, police said. The Rhode Island Attorney General’s office is handling the return of both men.
Brown is currently answering to the Hampton charges. Information on that case is available through the Virginia Judiciary’s online case search.
The shooting occurred July 19 at approximately 9:55 p.m. near Truman Road and Rosedale Avenue, where officers found two Newport residents — ages 22 and 25 — with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to their lower extremities. Police characterized the incident as targeted and isolated. Newport Police identified Johnson as a suspect and released images of a second individual on July 23, warning that Johnson was considered armed and dangerous.
