Internationally recognized batik artists Agus Ismoyo and Nia Fliam will visit the Jamestown Arts Center on Thursday, July 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. for an illustrated artist talk and trunk show exploring the cultural, philosophical, and creative dimensions of Indonesian batik.
Drawing on more than 40 years of artistic practice at their studio, Babaran Segaragunung, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the husband-and-wife team will discuss their work and its roots in the ancient Javanese text Suluk Ambatik — framing batik not merely as a decorative art form but as a process of character-building, cultural transmission, and creative transformation. Following the presentation, guests are invited to a meet-and-greet and trunk show featuring handmade batik textiles, wearable art, and accessories.
The talk is pay-what-you-can; RSVP is encouraged.
Related programming includes a two-day immersive workshop, Wax/Threads/Roots: A Batik Workshop with Babaran Segaragunung, on August 1 and 2, open to participants 18 and older regardless of experience level. Registration is $510 for non-members.
