The Rhode Island Department of Health is recommending that the swimming area at Mackerel Cove in Jamestown reopen after bacteria counts returned to safe levels.
The recommendation comes days after the department advised closing the swimming area at Mackerel Cove, along with several other beaches in Newport, Tiverton and elsewhere, because of high bacteria counts.
State health officials will continue to monitor and review beach water quality through Labor Day, and a beach’s status may change as new data become available. The most up-to-date information is available through a recorded message on the department’s beaches telephone line at 401-222-2751, and a list of closed beaches can be found at health.ri.gov.
