Portsmouth captured its second straight boys lacrosse state championship, beating Westerly 10-6 in the Rhode Island Division 2 final at Brown University on Saturday, June 6.
The Patriots led just 7-6 after three quarters before their defense took over, holding Westerly to a single shot on goal in the fourth quarter to pull away for the repeat title.
Senior Luke Brandariz led Portsmouth with a career-high four goals. Senior captain Oliver Melanson added two goals and an assist, and junior captain Teddy Gersen scored twice. Senior captain Jack Colna made 12 saves in goal to close out his high school career.
Westerly was led by Evan Morisete, who had a goal and two assists. His brother, Ian Morisete, and Caleb Williams each contributed a goal and an assist. Alex Mynuk made 11 saves for Westerly.
The win caps back-to-back championship seasons for Portsmouth.
