The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center will mark the 250th anniversary of the United States with “American Character(s),” a film series exploring the figures and stories that have defined American cinema, running June 10 through July 7.

The series brings together Hollywood classics and documentaries that examine both the characters in American movies and the character of the country itself. It opens with “The Godfather” on June 10, served with complimentary cannolis, and runs through a 70th-anniversary restored edition of “The Searchers” on July 7.

“Cinema has always been one of America’s great storytelling arts,” said Alex Whitney, general manager. “The characters in these films are larger than life, but they are also deeply recognizable. They embody our aspirations, our anxieties, our sense of humor, our resilience, and our contradictions.”

The lineup includes “Thelma & Louise” (June 16), “Do the Right Thing” (June 19), “The Patriot” (July 3), “Grease” (July 4), “A League of Their Own” and “Remember the Titans” (both July 5). Several screenings come with special programming: a celebration of Mel Brooks’ 100th birthday with “Blazing Saddles” on June 28, and a Pinot Noir tasting with live jazz by the Chase Ceglie Jazz Trio before “Sweet Smell of Success” on June 30.

The series also highlights documentaries, including “Steal This Story, Please!” with acclaimed journalist Amy Goodman appearing in person June 27 and 28, and “WBCN and the American Revolution” on July 1, with a filmmaker Q&A about Boston’s legendary underground radio station.
