The Rhode Island General Assembly has passed legislation that would clear the way for property tax relief for Middletown veterans, sponsors announced.

The bill, 2026-H 7662, was introduced by Rep. Alex S. Finkelman, D-Dist. 74, Jamestown, Middletown, in partnership with Rep. Terri Cortvriend, D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown, and the Middletown Town Council. It passed the Assembly on April 28 and now heads to the governor for consideration.

The legislation would allow Middletown to adopt, by ordinance, a veterans’ property tax exemption for any veteran who was honorably discharged, or discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, regardless of dates or periods of service.

“Costs are rising every day, and our veterans are not immune to the negative impacts of inflation,” Finkelman said. “This bill acknowledges the great contributions Middletown’s veterans have made to our lives while also giving them desperately needed property tax relief. It’s the right thing to do to thank them for their service and to protect our veterans from being priced out of their own homes.”

The measure would also allow an additional tax credit or exemption on real and personal property for any veteran considered 100% totally disabled through a service-connected disability, or for the unmarried widow or widower of that person if not currently receiving the exemption. It would further provide for an exemption greater than $25,000 of value, or a tax credit offering equivalent relief.

“Middletown’s veterans have given and sacrificed so much to ensure our safety and freedom, and I believe their selflessness should be acknowledged and rewarded through much-needed tax relief,” Finkelman said. “Times are tough for so many these days, and this bill recognizes the fact that without our veterans, things could be even worse.”
