Newport Contemporary Ballet has been awarded $30,000 in funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo announced Tuesday.
The funding will support the ballet’s annual Newport Dance Festival, which this year will explore the theme of freedom in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary, according to the announcement.
“Federal investment in the arts strengthens Rhode Island’s vibrant cultural contributions, empowers our communities, and drives economic development across our state,” the lawmakers said in a joint statement. “This funding will help the Newport Ballet celebrate our 250th anniversary by bringing artists to Aquidneck Island, expanding community engagement, and celebrating our nation’s enduring freedom through dance.”
Mary Anne Carter, identified in the announcement as chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, said the agency supports opportunities for people across the country to experience and take part in the arts.
“As we celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary this year, it is a moment to recognize the important role the arts continue to play in our lives, communities, and heritage,” Carter said.
Reed, Whitehouse and Amo, all Democrats, said they support efforts to strengthen and expand Rhode Island’s arts and culture ecosystem.
