A Vermont man visiting Newport for the summer bought his first-ever lottery ticket at a Bellevue Avenue grocery store — and walked away $50,000 richer.

The Mendon, Vt., resident claimed the $50,000 prize on a Ruby Red 10X Instant Ticket purchased at Stop & Shop, 250 Bellevue Ave., according to the Rhode Island Lottery.

The winner said he had just returned to Rhode Island for a summer job and stopped at the grocery store to pick up food and supplies for his house. He told lottery officials he had noticed the lottery vending machine every time he shopped there last summer, and this year decided to buy a ticket for the first time. The red color on the Ruby Red 10X game caught his eye.

He was in disbelief over the win and said he plans to send some of the money to family in Jamaica.

Two Loteria winners claim $20,000 each

The $3 Loteria Instant Game also produced two $20,000 winners in Rhode Island this week.

A Coventry woman won $20,000 on a ticket purchased at Cumberland Farms, 785 Tiogue Ave. in Coventry. She told lottery officials she enjoys the Loteria-style game because of the various pictures to match, rather than numbers, and plans to use the winnings for home improvements.

A Pawtucket man also claimed a $20,000 Loteria prize on a ticket sold at Stateline Wine & Spirits, 880 Central Ave. in Pawtucket. He said Loteria is one of his favorite games to play and plans to put the money toward kitchen repairs at his home.
