newportFILM Presents LOWLAND KIDS, newportFILM’s First Screening in Rogers High School’s New Auditorium, Benefiting the Scholarship Fund (newportFILM)

newportFILM will present a special screening of “Lowland Kids” on Thursday, April 16, at Rogers High School Auditorium, 15 Wickham Road — marking the organization’s first screening in the school’s newly built auditorium.

Presented in partnership with the Rogers High School PTO and the Newport Public Education Foundation, the event will benefit the Rogers High School Scholarship Fund, with a portion of every ticket sold going directly to the fund. All concession proceeds, sold by the PTO, will benefit the Rogers High School Junior Class.

The evening opens at 6 p.m. with an acoustic guitar performance by a Rogers student before the film begins at 7 p.m.

“Lowland Kids” follows two teenagers and their uncle on Louisiana’s Isle de Jean Charles, one of the first communities recognized as America’s climate refugees. As rising seas erase the island, the family must confront the emotional reality of leaving behind the only home they have ever known, while the nation’s first federally funded mass relocation offers them a new place to start over. The film premiered at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen in 2025.

The Rogers PTO scholarships the event supports recognize graduating seniors for community service, extracurricular involvement and leadership rather than academic achievement.

“Rather than focusing on academic achievement, we seek to support students who have made positive contributions to Rogers High School and Aquidneck Island, and who strive to serve their future communities long after graduation,” said Kate Borgueta, PTO president.

Tickets are $15 and free for current Rogers students. They are available at newportfilm.com.
