Carmela Geer, who has led the Edward King House Senior Center since 2013, will step down as executive director on Sept. 11 to become health services coordinator for the Town of Middletown.
Under Geer’s leadership, the center expanded its programs and services, earned national accreditation through the National Institute of Senior Centers, and strengthened its finances through grant development and fundraising. The center now offers more than 90 programs and services annually.
“Serving as executive director of the Edward King House has been the greatest privilege of my professional career,” Geer said in a statement. She said the move is bittersweet but that she is excited to keep serving Aquidneck Island residents in a role focused on community health and wellness, and that she leaves the organization financially strong and well positioned.
Board President Dr. Anna Matos-Mournighan credited Geer with transforming the center in ways that will benefit the community for generations, pointing to gains in programs, partnerships, financial stability and long-term strategy.
The Board of Directors has begun a search for the next executive director and says programs and services will continue without interruption during the transition.
