The city is recruiting volunteers to serve on a newly re-established commission focused on making Newport more accessible to people with disabilities.
The City Council voted last month to revive the Accessibility Advisory Commission, which will advise the council on policies to improve access and inclusivity for residents and visitors.
The seven-member volunteer commission will help the city meet its obligations under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires municipalities to involve people with disabilities in identifying and removing barriers to accessibility.
Newport previously had an Accessibility Advisory Commission that operated from 2006 to 2013 and contributed to ADA improvements throughout the city.
The commission aims to “foster a more inclusive community that ensures equal access and participation for all residents and visitors, including those with disabilities,” according to a city press release issued Tuesday.
The city is seeking applicants with relevant expertise and lived experience who are passionate about removing barriers to access and inclusion. Commission members must be registered Newport voters and can serve either two- or three-year terms.
Interested residents can apply online through the city’s Talent Bank at www.CityofNewport.com/TalentBank or by submitting an application to the mayor’s office.
