The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority will install a weigh-in-motion system on Route 138 near the Conanicus Avenue and East Shore Road ramps, requiring temporary lane closures through Thursday, Nov. 6.

The work zone schedule is:

  • Monday, Nov. 3: Eastbound high-speed lane closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 4: Eastbound low-speed lane closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 5: Westbound high-speed lane closed from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 6: Westbound low-speed lane closed from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“The installation of the WIM system is another way we are deploying technology to strengthen and maintain our infrastructure,” said Lori Caron Silveira, executive director of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority. “We ask drivers for their cooperation while crews complete this work and urge everyone to slow down and pay attention when traveling through the area.”

A weigh-in-motion system uses sensors embedded in the road to automatically weigh vehicles as they drive over them, measuring gross and axle weights. The systems collect data including vehicle speed, axle counts and weight to help enforce weight limits, protect infrastructure and gather traffic statistics.
