The Newport Public Education Foundation will honor four recipients at its annual Evening for Education event Oct. 23, recognizing outstanding contributions to the city’s public schools.
The awards ceremony will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Innovate Newport. Tickets are available at npef-ri.org.
This year’s Noreen Stonor Drexel Education Award recipients are Ruth Barge Thumbtzen as Friend of Education, Team Fame as Partner in Education and Bike Newport as Unsung Hero. Sybil Grayko was named Newport Public Schools District Teacher of the Year.
“This year’s award recipients represent what is so special about our public schools and our city,” said Kimberly Behan, president of the foundation. “It’s inspiring to see our community members and organizations rise to the challenge of supporting our students and educators.”
Thumbtzen is being recognized for her long-standing commitment to providing enriching experiences and opportunities for Newport students beyond the classroom.
Team Fame, a program of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, was selected for creating a safe and nurturing environment for middle school students that fosters academic and personal growth.
Bike Newport earned recognition for promoting healthy, active lifestyles among Newport youth through initiatives that teach life skills while instilling community values and environmental responsibility.
Grayko, the district’s teacher of the year, was celebrated for her innovative teaching methods, dedication to student success and leadership within the school community.
The Newport Public Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization that enhances educational opportunities for students in Newport’s public schools through grants, scholarships and community partnerships.
