Krista Wilhelmsen, soprano

The Narragansett Bay Symphony Community Orchestra will kick off its 2025-2026 season with a diverse program ranging from French impressionism to American jazz Nov. 2 at East Providence High School.

The 3 p.m. concert at the school’s auditorium, 2000 Pawtucket Ave., will feature interim Music Director John Eells leading the orchestra through works by Maurice Ravel, Hector Berlioz, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Dmitri Shostakovich and George Gershwin.

The program opens with Ravel’s “Pavane for a Dead Princess,” followed by Berlioz’s “Summer Nights,” Op. 7, a six-poem song cycle featuring local soprano Krista Wilhelmsen. The first half closes with Coleridge-Taylor’s “Rhapsodic Dance, The Bamboula,” Op. 75, based on a West Indian dance tune.

After intermission, the orchestra will perform Shostakovich’s “Tahiti Trot,” Op. 16, an arrangement of “Tea for Two” from the musical “No, No, Nanette,” before concluding with Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” which captures the sights and sounds of 1920s Paris through jazz-influenced orchestration.

Admission is “pay what you think is fair,” with tickets available at the door or in advance at nabsco.org. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to support the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
