Since the industrial revolution of the late 1800s, coal has remained a significant energy source in the United States, peaking in the mid-20th century, and declining because of environmental concerns. Even with those concerns, coal remains a significant source of energy in certain areas of the United States.

Recently, the Trump administration has been promoting coal as an energy source, despite environmental concerns.

Bob Wyss, a former Providence Journal environmental and energy reporter and editor, is the author of “Black Gold: The Rise, Reign, and Fall of American Coal,” which was released within the last couple of weeks.

He will be at Charter Books in Newport on October 17 at 6 p.m., where he will share stories and anecdotes of people and places he talks about in his book. Bob will also be at Symposium Books in Providence on October 16 at 6 p.m.

We recently had an opportunity to talk with Bob about coal’s impact on the growth of the American economy, and its debilitating health and environmental impacts … and his concerns about the president’s attempts to revive the industry.
