Charter Books will host Rhode Island cookbook author Polina Chesnakova for a cooking demonstration and tasting on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Pivotal Brewing.

Chesnakova will demonstrate how to make varenyky, a stuffed dumpling featured in her recently published cookbook “Chesnok: Cooking from My Corner of the Diaspora: Recipes from Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.”

The event runs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Pivotal Brewing, 140 Broadway. It will include a tasting menu of savory and sweet dishes from the cookbook, followed by a question-and-answer session and book signing.

Tickets cost $55 for a single admission and $65 for couples. Each ticket includes a signed copy of the book and one complimentary drink. Tickets are available at charterbookstore.com/events.

The cookbook features more than 110 recipes from the Soviet diaspora, including Georgian, Armenian, Ukrainian and Russian dishes. Chesnakova was born in Ukraine to Russian and Armenian parents from Georgia and was raised in Rhode Island.

This marks Charter Books’ first cookbook event. The independent bookstore opened in 2020 at 8 Broadway in Newport.

Chesnakova has written two previous cookbooks, “Hot Cheese” and “Everyday Cake.” Her work has been published in Saveur, Epicurious, The Washington Post and Food 52.
