Portsmouth

The Portsmouth Town Council will tackle several community initiatives when it meets Tuesday, August 12, at 7 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers at Portsmouth Town Hall.

Among the key items on the agenda is a request to bring a disc golf course to Portsmouth with support from the Parks and Recreation Committee. The council will also consider allowing a temporary public display in front of Town Hall from August 25 to September 2 to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. The display would feature 329 individual flags representing Rhode Islanders lost to opioid overdoses in 2024.

The council will discuss a potential amendment to the town’s alcoholic beverage ordinance to include language addressing cannabis-infused beverages, presented by Portsmouth Public Health Prevention Coordinator G. Cranson and J.C. Payero.

Other business includes approving a resolution supporting increased funding for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority and reviewing a construction and maintenance agreement from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.

The Town Administrator will provide updates on upcoming Energy Facility Siting Board public hearings, RIPTA public hearings, a fire department promotion ceremony, an audit update, and National Night Out. The report will also cover school building projects, road paving notices, the Mount Hope Bridge closing, and welcome the new school superintendent.

Under correspondence, the council will receive notice of a final hearing on September 8 regarding SouthCoast Wind Energy LLC’s application for major energy facilities in Portsmouth, and information about a public hearing on August 27 at Portsmouth Middle School concerning a potential natural gas moratorium on Aquidneck Island.

The meeting will be live-streamed at https://livestream.portsmouthri.com/towncouncil and accessible by phone at 1-888-788-0099 with meeting ID 996-8471-9966#.
