🚨 You need to know
BankNewport’s Charitable Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to Jamestown Community Farm to support the nonprofit’s “One Chance Campaign,” an effort to permanently acquire 15 acres of farmland on Conanicut Island that has housed the organization’s operations for more than two decades.
The grant will help the farm meet annual payment obligations under a purchase agreement as part of a broader $4.45 million campaign goal to secure the land and establish an operational endowment. The farmland has served as the base for operations that deliver 11 to 14 tons of fresh vegetables annually to food pantries across Rhode Island, including locations in Providence, Newport and South Kingstown.
“Jamestown Community Farm has become a vital food source and a model of grassroots community resilience,” said Jack Murphy, president and CEO of BankNewport. “We’re proud to invest in a project that not only protects essential farmland, but also guarantees a steady supply of healthy, local produce to Rhode Islanders who need it most.”
Founded by Bob and Lynda Sutton more than 20 years ago, the farm operates year-round using sustainable practices without pesticides or commercial fertilizers. The organization relies on interns and volunteers to harvest and distribute produce to partner organizations including McAuley House in Providence, MLK Community Center in Newport, Johnny Cake Center in South Kingstown and the Jamestown Community Pantry.
Beyond food distribution, the farm maintains community connections through a weekly farm stand, holiday programs and educational opportunities. The One Chance Campaign represents what organizers call a transformative opportunity to preserve the farmland and ensure continued operations for future generations.
