Over 125 Newport residents came together at Pell Elementary School on Thursday for a community dinner. The event, put on by RENEWport, aimed to connect families of third and fourth-grade students with local organizations.

Kids enjoyed activities and arts performances while everyone shared a meal. Ellen Pinnock, RENEWport’s Co-President, explained that the event helps strengthen ties between schools and the community, showing children they’re valued and supported.

Pinnock said, “RENEWport is adding bricks to the bridge of school and community connection and it sends a powerful message to our children that they are seen, valued and supported by many. These connections help build a foundation for a thriving public school system.”

The evening featured performances by Newport Contemporary Ballet and Newport Sings, along with hands-on activities from groups like Save The Bay, TeamFAME, and the Newport Historical Society.

Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain and Pell Principal Traci Westman welcomed families and thanked RENEWport and the participating organizations.

Susan Sipprelle, who founded RENEWport and serves as Co-President, emphasized the importance of public education and the organization’s efforts to build stronger community connections.

“Public education is a public good,” said Sipprelle. “RENEWport is working to build stronger connections between the Newport Public Schools and the wider community. Next year, RENEWport plans to hold an all-school dinner at Pell, and we look forward to continuing to support the school and its students and families.”

RENEWport plans to expand the event next year to include the entire school. They also raffled off ten $100 gift cards to families in attendance. Rogers High School Key Club members pitched in, helping with food service and setting up activities.

Newport City Council Member Xay Khamsyvoravong and School Committee Member Beth Cullen were among the notable attendees at the event.
