Middletown Town Council Meeting on Monday, March 17, 2025. (via Town of Middletown)

The Middletown Town Council gave the green light on Monday night to send a draft regional hazard mitigation plan to state and federal agencies for review.

Council members heard about the joint effort with nearby towns and Naval Station Newport to create a strategy for dealing with potential hazards.

The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency and Federal Emergency Management Agency are next in line to review the draft plan.

The council also sent proposed changes to the town’s zoning rules to the Planning Board for a closer look. These changes would open up R-10 and R-20 zoning areas for multi-family housing.

Councilor Dennis Turano put forward a plan to support community cleanup efforts, including the Middletown Clean initiative.

The council also took care of some routine business:

  • Giving a three-year contract for painting beaches and related facilities to StrateGic Solution Team LLC.
  • Approving the Middletown Annual Egg Hunt for April 12.
  • Allowing the Saturday Farmer’s Market to run from May 3 to Oct. 26.

The next council meeting on March 31 will focus on the town’s affordable housing plans with Pennrose. Residents can check out the latest plan at https://mdl.town/AH-Pennrose.
