Local historian, naturalist, and conservationist Garry Plunkett will give a talk titled “Eight Rod Way: Tiverton’s Colonial Superhighway and the Black Workforce Living on It” at the Tiverton Public Library on Wednesday, February 12th, at 6:30 pm.

The first Plymouth Colony subdivision of land that eventually became Tiverton was the Pocasset Purchase of 1681. It included 30 “great lots” and a 132-foot wide “proprietor’s way.” This presentation will explain why 3.5 miles of that original highway remain undeveloped in preserved wild forest but was once home to Blacks who labored in two of Tiverton‘s early industries.

This program is free and open to the public and will be held at the library on 34 Roosevelt Avenue in Tiverton.
