A Wish Come True, Rhode Island’s longest-running wish-granting organization, is gearing up for its annual Polar Plunge on New Year’s Day 2025 at Easton’s Beach in Newport.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and aims to raise money for two local kids facing serious health challenges.

This year’s spotlight is on two young “Wish Kids”: 8-year-old Lars from Jamestown, who had a stroke last February, and 4-year-old Indy from Coventry, who’s battling brain cancer. Both kids dream of visiting Florida – one hopes to go to Disney, while the other wants to stay at a special Marriott resort.

LiUNA- RI Laborers’ District Council is stepping up as the main sponsor. Arthur Jordan, who manages business for the Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council and Laborers’ Local 1322, shared, “One of our team members is going through an incredibly tough time watching his daughter fight for her life. We want to show up for his family.”

Mary-Kate O’Leary, who heads A Wish Come True, explained, “Many people don’t realize they’re helping make dreams come true for kids with life-threatening illnesses. This event brings together over 5,000 people willing to jump into cold water for a good cause.”

The organization suggests a $25 donation to take the plunge. They’re also challenging companies and individuals to form teams, with a chance to win $1,500 for any team that raises at least $1,000.

The money raised helps bring joy and financial support to children and their families during difficult times. Sponsorship options range from $250 to $2,500, with details available at www.awish.org.

Can’t make it to the event? You can still contribute through the organization’s website. For more information about the Polar Plunge or A Wish Come True, reach out to Mary-Kate O’Leary at 401-781-9199 or marykate@awishcometrue.org.
