The Potter League for Animals is stepping up to assist its longtime partner, the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina, which remains without power following Hurricane Helene.

The Middletown-based organization is set to receive 14 dogs from the affected shelter on Thursday, October 3, at approximately 8:00 am.

In collaboration with the Friends of the Animal Shelter – Aiken County (FOTAS), a nonprofit volunteer organization, the Potter League is not only providing shelter for displaced animals but also facilitating the delivery of essential supplies to local residents impacted by the storm.

Brad Shear, Potter League CEO, emphasizes the severity of the situation: “The devastation from Hurricane Helene has hit the Aiken County Animal Shelter especially hard, and we’re doing everything we can to support them during this challenging time.”

The partnership between the Potter League and Aiken County Animal Shelter, established in 2012, has been crucial in providing resources and support for animals in need. This latest effort underscores the importance of their collaboration during times of crisis.

FOTAS is working to deliver pet food and other critical supplies to local residents affected by the storm. Due to gas shortages, many people are unable to access much-needed resources, including those for their pets.

The Potter League is calling on the community to assist by donating essential supplies to be sent back with the transport to South Carolina. The shelter is in urgent need of dog beds, dog toys, and puppy and adult dog food.

“These 14 dogs are just a part of the story – many more animals and people still need our help,” Shear adds.

Due to the lack of power, the Aiken County Animal Shelter is unable to wash bedding and toys or provide other comforts to the animals. Donations can be dropped off at 87 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, RI no later than Thursday morning to be included in the shipment back to Aiken County.

The dogs arriving in Rhode Island will receive necessary medical care, vaccinations, and behavioral assessments before becoming available for adoption.

For those looking to help, donations can be dropped off at 87 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, RI. For more information, contact the Potter League for Animals at 401-846-8276.
