Newport residents and visitors should prepare for several road closures and traffic detours during the upcoming weekend of Oct. 12-14. The Newport Police Department has issued a press release detailing the closures, which will impact major thoroughfares including Broadway and Memorial Boulevard.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, Broadway will be closed from Gould Street south to the bottom of Washington Square from 8 am to 9 pm for The Broadway Street Fair. Traffic will be detoured to Wheatland Boulevard during this time.

The Amica Marathon will necessitate the closure of Memorial Boulevard westbound from Easton’s Beach to Thames Street on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 7 am to 8 am.

The Italian Festival Parade on Monday, Oct. 14, will result in additional closures. Broadway from Gould Street to the bottom of Washington Square will be closed starting at 8:30 am for approximately one hour. Again, traffic will be detoured to Wheatland Boulevard.

“Please anticipate traffic delays and plan your travels accordingly,” the Newport Police Department advises in its statement.

The parade route for the Italian Festival celebration has also been announced. It will begin in front of St. Joseph’s Church on Broadway and proceed to Washington Square, then to Thames Street, Americas Cup, and Memorial Boulevard. The procession will conclude at the Columbus statue on Memorial Boulevard at Bellevue Avenue.

A small ceremony lasting about 30 minutes will take place at the statue following the parade’s conclusion.

These events are expected to draw significant crowds to Newport’s downtown area, potentially impacting local businesses and residents. Visitors attending the street fair, marathon, or Italian Festival celebrations are encouraged to arrive early and consider alternative transportation options where possible.
