“Opening the Oyster: African American Foodways in Rhode Island, 1726-Present” will be held at the Tiverton Public Library on Tuesday, October 1, at 6:30 pm.
The event is free and open to the public. The event will be held at the library on 34 Roosevelt Avenue in Tiverton, RI.
“Opening the Oyster” is a presentation by Robb Dimmick, scholar and Stages of Freedom co-founder. The presentation is a comprehensive examination of African American culinary arts, foodways, and dishes that were created by Rhode Island African American master chefs from the 18th and 19th centuries. The program includes information on the life of the Pastry Queen of Rhode Island, Cuffy Cock Roach, inventor of the turtle frolick, Albro Lyons, purveyor of ice cream, and George T. Downing, the nation’s premier caterer.
This program illuminates and celebrates Black Rhode Island life and culture to a large and diverse audience.
