The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center (The JPT) celebrates the 25th anniversary of the acclaimed documentary The Heart of Hip Hop on August 20. The film features Newport’s first and only hip-hop dance troupe, Off The Curb.
Founded by Jackie Henderson in 1992, Off The Curb was a youth outreach program dedicated to using hip-hop dance to inspire self-expression and steer young people away from negative influences. Susan Cobey’s documentary follows Jackie and her troupe over three years (1997 to 1999), capturing the dynamic and transformative impact of their work. The Heart of Hip Hop has received numerous film festival awards and was broadcast on PBS, celebrating the troupe’s significant contributions to dance and community.
Jackie Henderson and members of Off The Curb will be in attendance. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A featuring Jackie Henderson to give guests the opportunity to hear more about Off The Curb and Jackie’s impact on the dance community.
“I am thrilled to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Heart of Hip Hop at The JPT. It’s been an incredible journey seeing how our story has resonated with so many people. This documentary captures what Off The Curb was all about—using hip hop dance to inspire and uplift young people,” said Jackie Henderson. “I’m looking forward to sharing this special evening with our community and engaging with everyone during the Q&A session. We hope that you will join us in celebrating this milestone!”
“At The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center, we are honored to host the 25th anniversary screening of The Heart of Hip Hop.
