U.S. Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02) is making his presence felt on Block Island, meeting with residents and visiting key local institutions to address community concerns and highlight federal support for the area.

Magaziner hosted his second town hall with New Shoreham residents on Aug. 7, providing updates on his work in Rhode Island and Washington, D.C. The congressman focused on efforts to lower costs and advocate for Rhode Island priorities.

“I want to be the best advocate for my constituents, and that means traveling across our district to hear directly from constituents so I can bring their feedback to Washington,” Magaziner said.

During the town hall, Magaziner discussed his work to protect Social Security and Medicare, lower consumer costs, defend abortion access, and secure federal funding for Rhode Island.

The congressman emphasized his commitment to ensuring federal dollars reach communities across the state, including Block Island.

“I am pleased to have helped secure federal funding to meet the needs of Block Island residents and visitors, and will continue fighting to ensure federal dollars are felt in communities all across Rhode Island,” he stated.

Following the town hall, Magaziner visited the Block Island Fire Station, meeting with Fire Chief Chris Hobe and local firefighters. The tour included discussions on the ongoing construction of a new Block Island Public Safety Complex.

Magaziner highlighted his efforts to support Rhode Island’s firefighters, including co-sponsoring legislation to expand access to mental health resources for first responders and fund research for PFAS-free gear.

The congressman has also signed two letters supporting grants to help local governments hire firefighters, purchase equipment, and ensure first responders are properly trained and equipped.

Magaziner’s visit to the island concluded with a stop at the Block Island Maritime Institute (BIMI). There, he witnessed the institute’s conservation work firsthand and met with Executive Director Valerie Preler.

Preler shared details about BIMI’s efforts to preserve the Great Salt Pond and the surrounding environment. As a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, Magaziner supports over $16 million in grant funding to study human impacts on marine mammals and their ecosystems.
