The Preservation Society of Newport County will present a lecture by Dr. Philip Rylands, President, and CEO of the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida, on Thursday, August 8, 2024, titled “Peggy Guggenheim: Heiress and Collector.”

The event, which takes place at 6 p.m. in the Rosecliff ballroom, will feature a presentation by Rylands, who will discuss the life and collection of the renowned artist, Peggy Guggenheim.

“Dr. Rylands is an eminent expert on this woman who had a tremendous impact on the modern art world, and his talk will be a great learning opportunity for all of us,” says Trudy Coxe, CEO, and Executive Director of the Preservation Society.

Guggenheim was a major supporter of Jackson Pollock when he was at the center of controversy over his work. Her support for the controversial artist during this time is explored by Rylands in his lecture, where he states, “Peggy Guggenheim: Heiress and Collector” is the Preservation Society’s annual lecture named after the Chairman and President of its Board of Trustees from 1977-1989, John G. Winslow.

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Preservation Society of Newport County will conclude its Summer 2024 Lecture Series with a look at the life and collection of Peggy Guggenheim, a fascinating and important figure in the world of mid-20th century art.

The speaker on Thursday, August 8, at 6 p.m. will be Dr. Philip Rylands, President and CEO of The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida, and former Director of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. He will present “Peggy Guggenheim: Heiress and Collector” live in the Rosecliff ballroom and via Zoom video conference.

“Dr. Rylands is an eminent expert on this woman who had a tremendous impact on the modern art world, and his talk will be a great learning opportunity for all of us,” said Trudy Coxe, CEO and Executive Director of the Preservation Society.

In addition to amassing a remarkable collection of Cubist, Surrealist and Abstract art, Guggenheim also was a major supporter of Jackson Pollock at a time when his work aroused controversy.

“Peggy Guggenheim: Heiress and Collector” is the Preservation Society’s annual lecture named in honor of John G. Winslow, the Chairman and President of its Board of Trustees from 1977-1989. “China and Newport” and “Animals in the Gilded Age”

Earlier, on Tuesday, August 6, two of the Preservation Society’s Curatorial Research Fellows will present results of their work for the past year. Dani Zhang will discuss “China and Newport: A Journey through Two Centuries,” sharing her discoveries about many of the Chinese-made art and decorative objects in the Preservation Society’s Newport Mansions. And Isla Stewart will explore “Animals in the Gilded Age,” highlighting her research into objects that will be featured in the exhibition at Rosecliff, “Wild Imagination,” which opens August 30.
