Newport City Hall.

With deadlines past now for local candidate declarations, signatures, validation of signatures, ballot placement, and candidate withdraws – the field for local elections, cities and towns and state legislature, is set. No surprises.

Little has changed since individuals declared their candidacies in June. Very few candidates statewide either withdrew by the July 19 deadline or were rejected by the Secretary of State’s office, unable to obtain the required number of signatures for the positions for which they were running. One candidate, Jeffrey Dinsmore, who is running for town council in Richmond, is listed as under review.

Perhaps most notable is clarity in the race for U.S. House of Representatives in District 1, now held by Democrat Gabriel Amo, who has qualified to run with 1,330 signatures, well above the required 500. Also qualified was perennial candidate Allen Waters, running as a Republican (he’s run as a Democrat before) with 503 of the required 500 signatures.

Not qualified for the House race were Democrat Eddy Medrano, who collected 161 of the required 500 signatures, and Republican Jeffrey Lamire, who collected 67 of the required 500 signatures.

In local elections, little has changed.

In Newport, According to the Secretary of State’s election site, council at large candidate Richard S. Spinney did not qualify and  Newport School Committee candidates Alicia Cipriano and Virna DeJesus Mateo, were listed as not qualifying for election.

Elsewhere in the Newport area it appeared, as of the Secretary of State’s site, that Tiverton Council Candidate Dennis J. Milbourne and School Committee candidate Jennifer Joslyn, did not qualify.

There are two Secretary of State’s lists. One just lists candidates, signatures, eligibility, ballot placement. The other does not list the number of signatures, but includes addresses, phone numbers and emails. It also lists very few candidates statewide that have either withdrawn from the election or were rejected. It would appear that the most up to date list is the one that included signatures and ballot placement, which is the list we have used to report qualified candidates.

The next significant date is August 7, when local boards of canvassers submit local questions to the Board of Elections.

Here’s a list of candidates, who appear to have qualified to run:
