The New England Music Organization proudly announces an evening celebrating live music with the Alan Bernstein Jazz Quartet at King Park on Friday, July 12th, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Presented in collaboration with North End Entertainment and the Friends Of The Waterfront thanks to a generous grant from the Isham Family Fund, this free event promises to deliver a captivating musical experience against the picturesque backdrop of Newport’s scenic waterfront.
Upright bass player Alan Bernstein recently retired as the Executive Director of the Community String Project of Bristol after spending 27 years in New England public schools, most of that time in Newport, RI. In an article titled “SPOTLIGHT on Music – This Week’s Conversation with Alan Bernstein” by Mark Gorman featured in Newport This Week on October 14, 2021, Bernstein’s profound dedication to education and his deep-rooted connection to Newport’s vibrant music scene were highlighted.

Originally a guitar player, Bernstein switched to bass as a student at the Rhode Island School of Music. His improvisation class needed a bass player so he decided to make the switch to help the group. Bernstein fell in love with the 4 stringed instrument and has been playing it for almost 50 years. The July 12th performance at King Park not only celebrates Bernstein’s illustrious career but also serves as a testament to the power of live music in fostering community spirit and promoting enjoyment of Newport’s public waterfront spaces.
Bernstein’s jazz quartet includes Dino Govoni on saxophone, Chris Taylor on piano and Rick Andre on drums. The concert is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs for seating.
