The All-Star break is wrapping up and that means the final stretch of the NECBL regular season has arrived.
The Newport Gulls enjoyed three days off and return to action on Wednesday when they host the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks with eight regular season games remaining.
Wednesday is Summer Camp Scholarship Night at Cardines Field. The Scholarship Fund was created in memory of Mark Weed, who was a lifelong Newporter and the late husband of the first female president of the RI State Senate, Teresa Paiva Weed. Teresa will be joined by many of her friends and family tomorrow night to celebrate Mark’s legacy and continue to raise money for the Scholarship Fund. Attendees of the Mark Weed Memorial Scholarship Night have been invited to join the Gulls on the field as part of the Pre-Game Ceremony, along with donors to the Fund. Additionally, 250 free 2024 Gulls Team Card Sets will be handed out courtesy of NE Veterinary.
Newport is 4-1 against Martha’s Vineyard this season and Wednesday will be the sixth of seven regular season meetings between the teams. The first five encounters all came in June with Newport winning the most recent matchup 6-3 on June 26th in a fog-shortened five-inning game at Cardines.
Wednesday’s game is the first of seven consecutive Coastal Division matchups for the Gulls as they attempt to officially secure a playoff spot and clinch the Division.
Gates open for Wednesday’s matchup at 5 with first pitch at 6:35. As always, if you can’t make it to Cardines Field, you can watch the action exclusively on ESPN+.
