The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) and the Rhode Island Institute for Labor Studies & Research (ILSR) announced a new paid training program to help transit drivers earn their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permits.

The program, which is open to all new transit drivers, offers a $25.33 per hour salary while they attend an instructor-led classroom-based program.

“We are thrilled to offer this new program that not only provides financial support while studying but also opens the door to a stable and fulfilling career,” said Christopher Durand, interim Chief Executive Officer. “This initiative reflects RIPTA’s commitment to establishing a workforce development program designed to remove barriers and support our local communities.”

To kick off the program, a job fair will be held on June 18, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at RIPTA Headquarters, 705 Elmwood Avenue, Providence. The event will allow potential applicants to learn more about the program, apply for jobs, and undergo onsite interviews.

Those interested in applying to the program are also encouraged to visit RIPTA.com/Jobs for more information.
