With election season getting underway, the City of Newport is looking for individuals interested in serving as Poll Workers for the upcoming primary and general elections.

Newport residents 16 years of age or older who are registered, or pre-registered to vote for those under 18, are encouraged to reach out to the City’s Canvassing Office at (401) 845-5386. Poll workers are able to make $275 per day, with various positions available and paid training offered as part of the recruitment process, according to the City of Newport.

The City says in a press release that it is particularly interested in recruiting some additional bilingual workers. All poll workers are required to be able to read the State Constitution in English and appointments may be contingent upon you successfully passing a test based on material presented to you in a training class.

Municipal employees, except teachers, are prohibited from working as Poll workers in a primary election in their city/town of employment. This restriction does not apply to the General Election. (R.I.G.L 17-15-14)

Poll workers are needed for the Statewide Primary Election on September 10, 2024 and the General Election on November 5, 2024.

More information about the upcoming election can be found on the City’s website at www.CityofNewport.com/Vote, or by visiting Vote.RI.Gov.
