The Middletown School Committee has selected William Niemeyer, the current principal of Gaudet Middle School, as the district’s new superintendent.
The announcement was made Monday night during a meeting of the School Committee in the Oliphant administration building.
Niemeyer, who has served as principal at Gaudet since the summer of 2021, was selected from a field of seven finalists that was narrowed down from 18 applicants in a nationwide search led by the New England School Development Council.
“I know we’re all very proud of this announcement and what it means for our schools and the town,” said School Committee Chairperson Theresa Spengler. “The School Committee was looking for a superintendent who is going to bring us to the next level of academic achievement and success.”
Spengler said Niemeyer has a “strong leadership capability” and will be an excellent fit for the district, its students, parents, educators and the community.
“Someone with strong leadership capabilities and works well with others,” she said. “We also wanted someone who is dedicated to Middletown, has a strong academic foundation and appreciates and understands our military community. Mr. Niemeyer is the right person to carry on our ‘Islander’ traditions and at the same time bring in a fresh innovative perspective to move Middletown forward.”
Niemeyer will begin in the new role of superintendent July 1, when he will replace Rosemarie K. Kraeger, who is retiring after more than 26 years leading the district.
