The Community College of Rhode Island is offering the community an exclusive opportunity to view Monday’s historic solar eclipse with free watch parties at each of its four campuses: Warwick, Providence, Lincoln, and Newport.
According to research, Monday’s eclipse is the first in almost a decade and the last one that will be visible in Rhode Island until 2079. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun. The next total solar eclipse to occur in the contiguous United States won’t be until August 2044 in Montana and North Dakota.
To commemorate this historic event, CCRI’s Department of Physics will show the official NASA live stream of Monday’s eclipse between 1–4 pm at the following locations:
- Warwick Campus Great Hall
- Newport County Campus Atrium
- Providence Campus Atrium
- Lincoln Campus Cafeteria
Peak totality for Rhode Island viewers is expected at approximately 3:28 pm. Those who wish to view the eclipse in person can do so between 2–4 pm (weather permitting) at either the Warwick Campus main entrance or outside of Entrance E at the Lincoln Campus. Solar glasses will be provided and guests are encouraged to follow proper safety precautions for viewing the eclipse in person.
