Newport City Council will conduct interviews in Executive Session for the Position of City Manager on Wednesday, April 3, at 10:30 am and Thursday, April 4 at 9 am.
Update: The City Council will also conduct interviews in Executive Session for the Position of City Manager on Monday, April 8, at 8:30 a.m, according to a meeting notice.
The Executive Session will occur in the Ground Floor Conference Room at Newport City Hall.
After 37 years with the City, longtime Newport City Manager Joseph J. Nicholson, Jr. stepped down from public service and his role as City Manager in September 2023. Nicholson is now the CEO of Bowen’s Wharf.
On February 5, 2024, Newport City officials announced that they would begin formally reviewing applications from more than two dozen candidates for the city manager position. The announcement comes after the City Council concluded its January search of 27 applicants from 13 states.
“As part of the City Manager selection process, a three-member screening committee will recommend candidates to the City Council, which will then be subject to a series of council-led interviews,” the City of Newport shared in February. “The committee will be comprised of senior state and municipal management professionals and will be selected by City Council members. The committee’s names will not be released until the screening process is complete, which is anticipated by February 15”.
According to city officials, “the first round of interviews will be held via Zoom on February 15, with a second and final round of interviews slated to be held in person before a final determination is made. The city also plans to conduct a public survey as part of the selection process”.
The City Manager oversees all day-to-day operations, manages a staff of 350 personnel, and leads the city’s government council.
