With summer fast approaching, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is reminding residents and visitors to ensure their fishing licenses are up to date.

Commercial marine licenses, multipurpose licenses, shellfish over 65 licenses, and nonresident standard licenses are all due by Thursday, 29 February. The DEM is mailing license renewal notices to those who hold licenses.

If you are unable to wait, you can renew your license online at the DEM’s Rhode Island Outdoors licensing website, by mail, or in person at the DEM Office of Boat Registration and Licensing.

The DEM will also be offering a 60-day grace period following immediately for late renewals. During this time, you can pay a $200 late fee if you opt to renew your marine licenses. Failure to renew your license by Feb. 29 will result in a $200 late fee.

You must also ensure you have a valid license to fish in Rhode Island. A valid license year runs from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2024.

If you have any questions about fishing license renewal or you want to check whether your license is valid, you can contact the DEM’s Division of Marine Fisheries in Jamestown Office at 401-423-1923.
