Join the Newport Historical Society in celebrating the holiday season. Take a lantern-lit tour of the streets of Newport or sing hymns inside the Colony House before seeing the Christmas in Newport official opening and tree lighting ceremony.
Holiday Open House: Start your holiday season with a touch of history at the Colony House on Washington Square. On Sunday, December 1, 2019 from 3pm-5pm the Newport Historical Society will host the annual Holiday Open House. Hear hymns and holiday carols, performed by living historians dressed in 18th century clothing, that were once sung in colonial Newport. A handout with lyrics will be provided, audience participation is encouraged. Admission is free, donations are welcome.
Christmas in Newport’s official opening and tree lighting ceremony in Washington Square immediately follows the event.
Holiday Lantern Tours: Hear the history of early American holiday traditions on an evening walk. Learn how Newporters did, or did not, observe the holidays.
Holiday Lantern Tours will be occurring every Friday and Saturday at 4pm starting on November 22, 2019, ending on December 28, 2019. Tours depart from The Museum of Newport History and Shop, 127 Thames Street, Newport, RI, and cost $15 per person, $10 for Society members and active duty military with ID. Advance registration is strongly encouraged as space is limited. Purchase tickets by calling 401-841-8770 or by visiting NewportHistoryTours.org or at the Museum of Newport History & Shop.
