“Six Picks” is our weekly rundown of some of the best music in the area this weekend. We mix it up with national touring acts and outstanding local artists playing the spots you known and love. This week, we focus on some top indie acts, along with a couple of all time great bands …
Local Show of the Week: Callery, Fitzgerald, HTH Friday at Psychic Readings (Providence)
Powerful songwriting is front and center Friday when three of our favorite RI-based musicians play Friday at Psychic Readings, a couple of doors down from AS220 at 95 Empire St. in Providence. Allysen Callery, Ian Fitzgerald and Will Houlihan are three soulful singer-songwriters who dig deep and touch the soul. Details here.
The English Beat Friday at The Ocean Mist (Matunuck)
80’s ska legends The English Beat will play The Ocean Mist in Matunuck Friday. The UK band continues to tour on such great hits as “I Confess,” “Mirror in the Bathroom” and “Save it for Later.” They’ll also have a few from their funky new album “Here We Go Love.” Details here. UPDATE: The show is Sold Out!
Beach Boys Sunday at Indian Ranch (Webster, MA)
What’s summer without the Beach Boys? “God Only Knows.” Well, “Don’t Worry Baby,” “America’s band” continues their “Surfin’ Safari,” playing shows in small American towns and places like “Kokomo.” Check out their “Good Vibrations” and have some “Fun, Fun, Fun” with the band Sunday at 2PM at the Indian Ranch Amphitheatre. Details here. Oh, and if you’ve seen them already, feel free to ride your “Little Deuce Coupe” and “Do it Again.” “Wouldn’t it be Nice?”
Silverteeth, Outcalls Friday at Columbus Theatre (Providence)
Newport-based Silverteeth headline our “Local Show of the Week” Friday at the Columbus Theatre. The band, led by Bill Bartholomew and Gabbi Rossi, will be joined by Baltimore’s Outcalls, who roll a fresh indie-pop beat over classically trained vocals. PVD based alt-rockers Heather Rose in Clover open. Details here.
Band of Horses Sunday at The Strand (Providence)
Indie-Rockers Band of Horses play The Strand (formerly Lupo’s) in Providence Sunday. The Seattle band is anchored by Ben Bridwell, and has built a loyal following since a Grammy nomination in 2010 for their album Infinite Arms. They’ve shared the stage with Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon among others. Check out show details here.
Rock and Jock Sunday at Crowne Plaza (Warwick)
Rock out Sunday at the Crown Plaza in Warwick for a great cause. The 18th annual Rock-N-Jock concert to benefit Children’s Charities of Rhode Island features Larry Braggs of Tower of Power, Charlie Huhn of Foghat and RI legends Steve Smith and the Nakeds and Neal and the Vipers.
