The Race Village at the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover will be open at Fort Adams State Park from 11 am to 7 pm today.

Parking is free and admission into the race village is free.

Go for a sail onboard a Sail Newport J22. No experience required! Experienced sailors will take you on a tour of Newport Harbor to see Fort Adams, the Race Village and more all from the water.

USCG Barque Eagle Public Tours: 11:00 am  – 6:30 pm

The 295-foot Barque Eagle,  the flagship of the U.S. Coast Guard, will be open for tours while in port. She serves as a training vessel for cadets at the Coast Guard Academy and candidates from the Officer Candidate School. The Eagle is the only active-duty sailing vessel in America’s military, and one of only two commissioned sailing vessels, along with the USS Constitution.

United States Coast Guard Barque EAGLE will have free, public tours in Race Village during Sail Newport. May 8- 2 -3:15 p.m. May 9- 11- 6:30 p.m.

Coast Guard Band Concert : 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

RIMTA and Newport County Chamber of Commerce will host a RIMTA Pop-Up Party: 5 pm

According to “Come show your support for Newport’s Volvo Ocean Race Stopover! Join your marine industry friends and colleagues at the Race Village at Fort Adams State Park on May 9th. The Pop-Up Party runs from 5-7 pm; we will meet at the RIMTA flag located near the Heineken Beer Garden. There’s free parking and the cash bars will be open…The party is organized by RIMTA and the Newport County Chamber of Commerce. Lemon & Line will be giving away 10 official Volvo Ocean Race bracelets. See you there!”

Daily Activities at the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover


Go for a sail onboard a Sail Newport J22. No experience required! Experienced sailors will take you on a tour of Newport Harbor to see Fort Adams, the Race Village and more all from the water.


Up to seven VO65 race boats will be docked at Fort Adams within yards of spectators. The public can view the boats up close from the piers


 A full-size VO65 has been cut in half allows visitors to crawl inside the race boat to experience the cramped quarters and layout of where the sailors live for nearly nine months.  Stand on the deck, and in the cockpit to grip the wheel.


Interactive exhibits on marine life, sailing, ocean conservation, wind, water and weather experiences, and marine technology.


A 3D cinema inside the giant dome provides the audience with an interactive video to understand what it’s like to be a sailor in the race.


This is “pit row” for the teams to interact with visitors, meet with their shore crew and sponsors and study weather, courses and conditions. Most of the team bases will have a first floor available for public entrance.


Walk through this interactive structure, learning all Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks bring to your community. Climb into their latest vehicles, experience the industry leading safety features spread across their models.


A real working boatyard will be action every day repairing sails, equipment and meeting with teams to help the ocean racing yachts prepare for the Transatlantic leg.

A grinding machine is used on the race boats to control the trim of the sails.  Try your hand at this herculean task in the Grinding Challenge.

Newport Preservation Society is hosting a pop-up storefront with all things Newport, Rhode Island. Swing through and see what this town and ocean state has to offer.


Walk through the North Gate onto the Parade Field within the Fort walls to find the Kid Zone! Activities in the Kid Zone will include Face Painting, Bubble Bowling, Mini Golf, Lawn Games and more!
The Kid Zone is open Saturdays and Sundays, May 12-13 and May 19-20 from 11am – 4pm.
