A Salute to Health, Newport Hospital’s Summer Soiree Honoring Ginny and Jim Purviance, Raises $719,140

Among the total raised, evening’s special Fund-A- Need generates $385,850 to support the creation of a new behavioral health services program

With a pleasant breeze rolling off the water complemented by picturesque views of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay, more than 400 friends of Newport Hospital gathered at the historic Eisenhower House on Thursday, July 6, for the hospital’s 2017 summer soirée, A Salute to Health.

Serving as the hospital’s largest annual fundraiser and an opportunity to honor longtime donors Ginny and Jim Purviance, the event raised $719,140 to benefit programs with the most crucial funding needs. Of the total raised, the evening’s special fund-a-need generated $385,850 to support the expansion of Newport Hospital’s Behavioral Health Services Program by launching a new partial hospitalization program for patients struggling with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders.

The seaside celebration honoring the Purviances—two of Newport Hospital’s most dedicated and generous supporters—began with a sparkling cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception by Russell Morin Catering & Events, featuring a raw bar by Open Oyster, wine tasting by Vicker’s Liquors, and live music by the Michael Walsh Group.

Following the reception, Lifespan President and Chief Executive Officer, Timothy J. Babineau, MD, welcomed guests, thanked Newport Hospital leadership, led by Peter Capodilupo, Chair of the Newport Hospital Foundation Board, and recognized Ginny and Jim Purviance for their years of immeasurable contributions. Dr. Babineau ended by introducing United States Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who spoke of the state of healthcare and the leadership role of Lifespan.

A mentor, leader, and steadfast financier, Jim has shared his leadership and financial expertise serving on the Lifespan Investment Committee, as Chairman of the Newport Hospital Quality Committee for 10 years, and as a member of the Newport Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees for 20 years. Ginny, an accomplished landscape designer and painter, has shared both her time and talents, volunteering on several hospital committees and taking the lead as co-chair of the 2014 Summer Gala. Deeply committed to the long-term health of Newport County, the Purviances put forth their support of the event’s special fund-a-need.

“Everyone has had their life impacted by mental illness and addiction in some way. It touches all of us—every family and every friendship—and this is a program that will create positive change in our community,” said Ginny.

Eager to support the cause, guests raised their bid numbers high and often, including a number of guests who raised their cards at the $25,000 and $10,000 levels to directly support the launch of Newport Hospital’s partial hospitalization program for patients struggling with co-occurring disorders.

“You cannot pick up a newspaper or watch the television without hearing about the opioid crisis and the lack of programs nationally for those caught in the grip of mental illness,” said Crista F. Durand, President of Newport Hospital. “But thanks to the compassionate generosity of our donors, we will create a new path towards wellness for those who need this highly specialized program, ensuring Newport Hospital offers the full continuum of care that not only changes lives, but saves lives.”

Since 2008, Newport Hospital’s summer benefit has raised nearly $3.4 million for critical programs and related equipment, including the emergency department, interventional radiology, the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center, the Intensive Care Unit, diagnostic imaging, Women’s Health services and programs, and more.

Newport Hospital’s A Salute to Health was co-chaired by Holly M. Bannister, MD, Norey Dotterer Cullen, Anne Hamilton, and Kimberly Palmer. Among the events many corporate and individual sponsors were Wellness Champion Sponsors, Ginny and Jim Purviance, and three couples; Shelley and Nick Schorsch, Elizabeth and Bill Kahane, and Shirley and Mike Weil; Fitness Star Sponsor, Suzie Schochet; and Wellness Star Sponsors, BankNewport, Virginia Decker and Colin Keith, Pamela and David B. Ford, Bernard S. and Sarah M. Gewirz, Happy van Beuren, and Diane B. Wilsey
